Xbox One X

Is Xbox One X the best console ever? The gaming console from Microsoft is capable of playing games at 4k resolution. It’s also the smallest Xbox console ever. It will be available on November 7 for $499. The good news is that One X will play the older games from the previous Xbox consoles at a higher resolution. For details, see CNet’s article.

Steam on Windows 10

Steam on Windows will progressively get worse over time according to Tim Sweeney, the co-founder of Epic Games.

From Slashdot.

Slowly, over the next five years, they will force-patch Windows 10 to make Steam progressively worse and more broken. They’ll never completely break it, but will continue to break it until, in five years, people are so fed up that Steam is buggy that the Windows Store seem like an ideal alternative. That’s exactly what they did to their previous competitors in other areas. Now they’re doing it to Steam. It’s only just starting to become visible. Microsoft might not be competent enough to succeed with their plan but they are certainly trying,” Sweeney said. He adds the outcome of this would be forcing every app and game to be sold through the Windows Store alone. “If they can succeed in doing that then it’s a small leap to forcing all apps and games to be distributed through the Windows store. Once we reach that point, the PC has become a closed platform. It won’t be that one day they flip a switch that will break your Steam library — what they’re trying to do is a series of sneaky manoeuvres. They make it more and more inconvenient to use the old apps, and, simultaneously, they try to become the only source for the new ones,” he claims.

2000 Games on Steam for Linux

There are now over 2000 games on Steam for Linux according to Softpedia. That’s about 25% of the available games on Steam which has a total of 8000 games. It’s not bad considering Linux users are about 1% of the total number of Steam users. Steam on Linux is now in its third year. The anniversary was February 14.

Capturing Videos of Video Games

If you ever wonder how gamers capture videos of your video games, here are a few options. There’s a software program called Fraps which can be purchased for under $40. The program runs on the gaming PC and allows you to capture videos while playing. SteamOS OS can capture video screenshots, but it won’t capture videos of your games. Twitch.tv remains the popular choice for capturing the gaming experience. But there are other less-known options. There’s YouTube, Livestream, Ustream and others. You can also use Wowza with Adobe FMLE. You’ll need a Blackmagic capture device to capture your gaming PC or console. The last one is the best because it allows you to capture videos of your gaming console. It’s not a cheap option however, but if you have some coins to spare, it’s a pretty good option.

Linux Steam Gaining Momentum

Valve released Steam For Linux several weeks ago making it possible for Linux gamers to play games on the Linux platform. Initially 57 games were available on Linux steam. To entice gamers to play on the Linux platform, Valve offered steep discounts ranging from 50-75% off the normal price. Counter Strike is available for $4.99 and Half-Life for just $2.49. It gets better. Team Fortress is totally free.

Interestingly enough, Linux Today reported today that Linux Steam accounts to about 2 percent of the users at Steam. Not bad considering that Mac users are at 3 percent, and Mac Steam has been around since 2010. If you want to give Linux Steam a try, just download and install Linux. Choose any of these popular distributions: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora or everyone’s favorite distro at this moment, Linux Mint.

New Xbox 360 at $199

Microsoft revealed the price of the new Xbox 360 today at just $200. It’s sleek new design with glossy black finish is quite impressive. The biggest difference in my opinion is how quiet this new console compared to its predecessor. The whisper quiet console won’t drown out the sound when you’re watching Netflix late at night. The device also comes with a 250GB hard drive and a built-in Wi-Fi N adapter.

Microsoft also revealed the price of Kinect today at $150. If you don’t have a Xbox 360 and are looking to get one, you might want to take advantage of the bundle that includes the Xbox 360 that comes with a 4GB internal flash memory,  the Kinect and a game called Kinect adventures. The bundle is priced at $300.

If you are not familiar what Kinect can do, check out the Xbox 360 website. It’s similar to Wii, but without the paddle.

Tetris Turns 25

Tetris is one of my favorite games way back when. So simple, addicting, easy, but yet, it can be difficult. Russian mathematician Alexey Pajitnov designed the game back in 1984. Tetris is available in every imaginable gaming console, computer, PDA and smartphone. It’s still popular to this day. Pajitnov used shapes made up of four squares, hence Tetris which comes from the Greek word Tetra meaning four. Tetris is just one of those games that seems to be ageless. Tetris is 25 years old. For real. I still can’t believe it.

Nintendo’s Profit Up 77%

Who would have thought. With everyone raving about the Xbox 360 and the Playstation, Nintendo slingshots past its competitors. To note Nintendo was barely a mention a year ago. Over 10.21 millions units have been sold worldwide. Demand is very strong. As a result of brisk sales, Nintendo reported a net profit of 174.29 billion yen ($1.47 billion) in the year through March, up dramatically from 98.38 billion yen a year earlier. Nintendo is predicting 18% rise in profit sales next year. That is probably a very conservative number.
