Hardware Issues

My Linux desktop is sick. It’s having a hardware problem. It’s causing the kernel to panic. The mouse freezes and keyboard is flashing. At times, it causes the OS to shutdown. It doesn’t matter what distro I install. I tried the last 4 Ubuntu releases, Linux Mint 7, Linux Mint 8 and Fedora 12. I haven’t figured out yet if it’s a memory or a motherboard problem. I have eliminated just about everything else including power supply, CD, DVD, sound card and graphics card. It’s probably a memory issue. So now, I’m stuck on a Windows XP machine.

Interesting news today. The French and German government are sending out warnings to those who use IE as the fallout of the Google and China IE Zero Day security hack reverberates worldwide. Microsoft is directing users to use IE 8 instead. I say move to either Firefox, Safari or Chrome. I abandoned IE 5 years ago for the same reason. Some call for dumping IE now.

If you contemplating in interviewing with Google, better Google about what Google could possibly ask you during the interview, because Google, the company, tend to ask very tough interview questions. It’s interesting to hear about Google’s hiring policy, in that it focuses on super bright, intelligent people, which doesn’t seem to always translate to the best workers or workers with great interpersonal skills or better yet, workers with common sense.

Should Fedora release Fedora 13? For superstitious folks, thirteen is an unlucky number. Nevertheless, Fedora is forging ahead. Fedora 13 benchmarks are out, along with Ubuntu 10.04.

Posting Via Email

Posting via email is one of few features used sparingly by WordPress users. Most bloggers use the Admin – Dashboard interface to publish a post. Posting via email is a feature that has been around as long as I can remember, perhaps going back as far back as version 1.5. I’ve posted on via email once before and I don’t remember any details. To this day, I don’t know why I don’t use it. I thought I give this feature another try. Why not. The advantage of posting via email is you can work on an offline article with an email client. Another advantage is sending posts from a phone.

Ok, success. I was able to send a post via email. You are reading this article as proof. Just a couple of interesting things I want to add to the original post. You need to run wp-mail.php each time you send a post. That’s each time! Well, that sucks. I was hoping this whole process would be automated. You can however, install a plugin called WP-Cron, similar to the Unix command called cron, that will run wp-mail.php every 15 minutes or so. Better yet, if you have access to your server, just add a cron job to run wp-mail.php every 15 minutes.

If you need help in setting up your WordPress to send posts via email, you can read the documentation and installation setup here.

Super OS

I’m trying out this new distro called Super OS. It is essentially Ubuntu. It even looks like Ubuntu. The difference is all codecs are pre-installed. It works right of the box. No more messing around making movies, flash and mp3s to work.

Super OS is similar to Linux Mint and Kiwi Linux, all based from Ubuntu Linux. It’s definitely worth trying. I’m even thinking of trying out Linux Mint again. There is a new version Linux Mint 8 I have yet to try.

Kahel Linux

Introducing Kahel Linux, another Philippine-based distro, the third one of its kind, behind AMA and Bayanihan. Kahel means orange in the local language as evident in the orange shirt in the distro’s mascot. Kahel is based on Arch Linux which is part of the Debian family of distros. Kahel runs in Gnome and powered by the Linux 2.6.30 kernel. The distro supports NILFS2 and BTRFS by default. It also utilizes the Pacman and Package Kit. Visit Kahel’s website.

10 Best Free Linux Browsers

Linuxlinks.com gives a list of free Linux browsers:

  1. Firefox – Highly popular browser delivering safe, easy web browsing
  2. Chromium – Open-source project behind Google Chrome
  3. Opera – Popular graphical web browser and Internet suite
  4. Konqueror – KDE 4’s advanced file manager, web browser and document viewer
  5. Epiphany – Simple yet powerful GNOME web browser targeted at non-tech users
  6. Dillo – Small, stable, developer-friendly, usable, very fast, and extensible
  7. Arora – Simple webkit based web browser using Qt toolkit
  8. ELinks – Feature-rich program for browsing the web in text mode
  9. Lynx – Very fast and easy to use
  10. Flock – Built on Firefox, specializing in social networking and Web 2.0 facilities

My take: the first 5 browsers are definitely worth the look. Firefox is still the default and standard for Linux distributions. Chromium is making inroads. Wait, until Chrome OS comes out. There will be a big spike in Chromium’s use. Lynx is useful for scripting. Finally, Flock is just an interesting browser.
