Sun Microsystems and the OpenSolaris community just launched the first ever release of the open-source OpenSolaris operating system. The OpenSolaris 2008.05 release was a result of Sun’s Project Indiana which seeks to combine Sun’s innovation, enterprise-class capabilities and backward compatibility with Linux free, open-source, and efficient distribution model.

The main goal of Project Indiana is to reorient OpenSolaris to the general public.

OpenSolaris will install on laptops, desktops, servers and in data centers. The initial release includes a network-based package management system (IPS), a GNOME 2.2 desktop, Compiz Fusion and LiveCD technology supported on AMD64, Pentium, and Xeon EM64T platforms.

With the LiveCD, this means curious bystanders should be able to test OpenSolaris without making permanent changes to their systems. Updates, upgrades, adding and deleting software packages are done through the IPS package management system.

Taking a similar approach as Ubuntu, OpenSolaris releases are going to be delivered on a six-month cycle with bi-weekly development builds of the entire code base by the OpenSolaris community.

OpenSolaris features the Zettabyte File System or ZFS offering instant rollback and check-summing to prevent data corruption. Expect the AMP stack to be included (Apache, MySQL which is now part of Sun and of course the ever popular PHP.)

In addition, support for multiple boot and multiple OS is possible using Virtual Box.

The download is 686MB which took approximately 30 minutes to complete this morning starting at 5:30 PDT. Meanwhile, if you are curious about OpenSolaris, view Getting Started with OpenSolaris 2008.05.

A follow-up post of OpenSolaris will be in order in the next few days. Stay tuned.

Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, document, spreadsheet and presentation software, instant messaging and much more.

The latest Ubuntu version is Hardy Heron 8.04. There are two more days before Hardy Heron is released to the general public. If you want to know more about Ubuntu and its latest release, you can read more about it from the Ubuntu website.

For those not familiar with Ubuntu releases, you are probably wondering why Ubuntu jumped from 7.10 to 8.04. There is an easy explanation. Ubuntu releases are based on dates instead of incremental versioning format.

The Ubuntu community is committed to release a new version every six months. The latest version, Hardy Heron falls on April 2008, hence version 8.04. The previous release was 7.10 on October 2007.

3 Ways To Get Ubuntu

Download the CD installer - this is the easiest and fastest way to get Ubuntu. The download size is about 700 MB. There are dozens of mirror sites around the world to serve you. Choose a site near you.

Purchase CD - Canonical sells a pack of 20 CDs for €16.50. You can also try Amazon. Some sellers charge a bare minimum charging only for shipping rates.

Request a free CD - Or you can get Ubuntu for free. The only downside, delivery can take up to 10 weeks.

What’s new?

There are many changes since version 7.10. Here’s a quick rundown of the latest additions to Hardy Heron:

Linux Kernel 2.6.24

Gnome 2.22

Firefox 3 Beta 5

Brasero - a CD/DVD burning application

Vinagre - a VNC client

Totem - a movie player

and much more

Say Cheese

Speaking of Gnome 2.22, there is a cheesy program called Cheese giving you the ability to take pictures and videos from your web cam. It includes graphical effects like mauve, black and white, hulk, saturation, vertical and horizontal flips, vertigo, dice and warp. Here’s a sample photo with vertigo and dice effects.

To install the Cheese program, just type from the terminal:

#sudo apt-get install cheese

Enjoy the latest Ubuntu release.

I just read the latest WordPress Weekly Digest and this line item grabbed my attention: The introduction of auto-suggest for tag entering. Wow. That is going to be one great feature. I guess it will all depend on what kind of auto-suggestion feature WordPress will implement. The two styles I’m familiar with are Google’s Search box which uses the pull-down menu, and del.icio.us in-line suggestion. See snapshots below. I like the del.icio.us feature because it’s simple, effective and non-obtrusive. It will be a perfect fit for WordPress. Regardless, I’m happy to have an auto-suggesting tagging in WordPress.

Google Search

Del.icio.us

Del.icio.us’ feature appears and disappears if there is data in the tag field.
