Swamped Turbo Tax Servers

Imagine filing your tax returns electronically at the last minute. You pressed the submit button. You wait. And wait. And wait to get a confirmation but it doesn’t show up, not until several hours later. It’s past midnight and you wonder if your return made it on time. If tax day isn’t stressful enough, Intuit, the makers of Turbo Tax and Pro Series tax software made it even more interesting. Intuit servers were so swamped Tuesday night, it made filing returns a cardiac exercise.

According to Intuit, it sold more than 11 million copies of its Turbo tax software, but not all file electronically. I’m sure Intuit will fix this problem by next year. You could always try out the competition, H & R Taxcut. I’ve used them last two years, but I still file the old-fashion way, via snail mail. By the way, USPS was open until 10:00pm. I’m glad it’s over. What a relief.

  1. This is my fourth and LAST year of using TurboTax software.

Thought my experience previous to this was a good one in filing my returns, this year I could not send my returns electronically, i.e., e-file, as I thought I could, which is why I purchased TurboTax.

I had to stand in line yesterday at the post office to send my tax returns, and I was lucky that it was not so crowded.

There is one school of thought that one should not wait until the last minute to file, but when you owe the IRS monies, most people do wait until the last day to pay their taxes. It is, in fact, a financial hardship to some taxpayers, but they are complying with the Tax Code, to pay be April 15th.

TurboTax did not allow me to e-file, and that was the main reason I bought it. Never again.

  2. I agree with DC-Taxpayer! Also, what was TurboTax expecting? When you virtually blanket the media (did you see HOW MANY ads TurboTax had on TV??!!) with advertising, people respond. TurboTax let thousands of people down big time promising something that they knew they could not deliver on. (They knew how many units they had sold, how many servers they had, combined with a media blitz.) Then, in classic form they blame the customer! It doesn’t wash. Perhaps those who chose to file this way this way can expect a discount on this Slo-moTax software (er, TurboTax) next year? Or smarter yet, just try another company…

  3. I am with you. Intuit should have anticipated the number of people submitting their returns at the last minute. Their system simply couldn’t handle the load. Lessons learned for both tax filers and the Intuit.
