Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquaio, the celebrated Philippine featherweight boxer as well as the reigning WBC featherweight champion will fight the unheralded Jorge Solis for 12 rounds in Las Vegas tomorrow. The undefeated 27 year old Solis has a record of 32-3-0 with 23 KOs. Pacquiao is the clear favorite to win to retain his title, but tomorrow’s fight may be ripe for an upset. Why? Distractions.

Pacquaio is apparently running for a Congressional seat in the Philippines with the elections coming up next month. I’m not clear why Pacquiao would join politics — especially in the Philippines. If that wasn’t enough of a distraction, Pacquiao’s trainer of four years, Freddie Roach has left him to train with Oscar De La Hoya’s return fight with Floyd Meriweather, Jr. on May 5th. There’s also a battle between promoters Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya which included a court action threatening to stop the fight.

Can Pacquiao overcome the distractions? No one really knows. Everyone knows what Manny Pacquaio can do in the ring. Is Pacquaio mentally tough enough to overcome these distractions? We will soon find out — not a moment too soon. Tomorrow night.
