USA 16th in FIFA Rankings
Team USA fell to 16th place in the FIFA rankings after the World Cup. This is fair. Most American fans never believed Team USA was ranked 4th in the world at one time. The US performance in the World Cup showed the rest of the world that we have a long ways to go in terms of competing with the best teams of Europe, South America and Africa. As expected, the top five teams are: Brazil, Italy, Argentina, France and England. FIFA revised its formula which takes into account the recently completed World Cup Finals, the results of the last 4 years instead of 8 years with the previous ranking system. The new ranking formula also factors in strength of opponent and strength of region, and goals for and goals against. While the US dropped 11 places, rival Mexico dropped 14 places and currently sits at 18th place. Ouch. My Mexican friends are not happy. But, no love loss there for me. Who cares. It’s just a FIFA ranking. It doesn’t mean anything, but it feels good to be ranked higher than Mexico.
