Que Gol!
I had a feeling before the game that Argentina would continue on since they were clearly the better side after three games of group play in the World Cup. Mexico, my old nemesis was a struggling team. Mexico tied Angola and lost to Portugal in group play and barely qualified in my opinion, in a very easy group.
Today against Argentina, Mexico actually showed up and played their best game of the tournament. They gave the Argentinians a hard time until Maxi Rodriguez showed the world the best goal of the tournament by popping up a cross off his chest and volleying home a well-placed strike with his left foot from 25 yards out into the side netting.
Sorry Mexican fans, your team is just not good enough. FIFA gave you a gift by seeding you and then placing you in a very easy group, but then you struggled coming in at 2nd in the group which meant playing against the 1st place team of another group which unfortunately happens to be Argentina. In my opinion, Argentina is the best team of the tournament so far.
This is the fourth time in a row that Mexico has crashed out in the second round. Team USA beat Mexico 2-0 the last time around in World Cup 2002. Despite the loss, Mexican fans are hopeful. The wait is long. Another four years. We will see you in qualifying two years from now. USA fans will probably get a new coach and young players into the mix. 2010!
