PDF Support
Microsoft recently mentioned it is removing support for saving PDF files in its Microsoft Office 2007 suite of applications. In addition, Microsoft is introducing its own format. It sounds like Microsoft and Adobe had a hard time reaching an agreement for the PDF support. According to reports, Adobe wanted to Microsoft to charge for the feature, something Microsoft is not keen on doing. It could be that Adobe just wants to distance itself from Microsoft. Adobe sees Microsoft Office 2007 as a threat to its core business. Where does this leave you and me? If you need to create or save files in PDF. You’ll have several options you could pursue. Number one, you can buy Adobe Acrobat priced at $449, a rather pricey option. Two, you can download OpenOffice which has the ability to save files in PDF format. Three, you can continue to use an older version of Microsoft Office. It will be interesting to see how the office productivity industry will shape up in a couple of years. Microsoft will continue to be the defacto standard as long as corporate America supports it. There are no signs telling otherwise. It will be tough for other companies such as Adobe to compete.

I must say, I do enjoy this clear competitive advantage that OpenOffice.org has had, and will now continue to have, over Microsoft Office. ;> As you say, I will be very interested to see how things change in the next couple years. OpenOffice.org is approaching the tipping point, and the upgrade to MS Office 2007 is very cool looking, but otherwise expensive and not strictly necessary.
