Man vs Nature
Surfing Mavericks is the ultimate battle between man and nature. Man usually gets a whipping as well as a whopping. No one can never tame the wild and the powerful waves of nature. At certain times, you trust up your hands and give up.
But, these list of guys that ride the mountains of Mavericks, they buckle the norm, they mitigate the danger and overcome the impossible. These surfers deservingly are the best-prepared surfers to tackle the big waves of Mavericks.
They know the little nuances of the break. They can feel the current underneath them. They know the wind conditions, the swell direction and the impact these conditions have to how waves will break.
Most of all, they know when to go and when not to go. A decision that takes a split second which can send a surfer accelerating down the face of the wave or a pummeling down a mountain of white wash.
These men are well prepared. The waverunners are on standby to pull them out of harm’s way. There are also helicopters on standby in case of an emergency.
The ever-present danger will always be there. Despite the competition and the big prize, these men have a close brotherhood to help each other in times of danger because Mavericks is unforgiving. One tiny mistake can cost you your life.
A group such as this changes the dynamics just a little bit. You bet there is peer-pressure, but none of these men are forced to surf Mavericks. They are out there because they love what they do.
I have great respect for those who go out and paddle. As a surfer, it is often a battle of self, a battle of inner courage, a battle of the ‘cajones’ especially when the elements are big and powerful.
I would never surf Mavericks because I know my limits. It’s hard enough to get a pounding at 8 feet, how much more for waves of 20-30 feet. My hats off. I’ll watch the videos from the sidelines.
