Barbie

Here’s an interesting article from LiveScience which was also featured in Yahoo. I was shocked to hear that Barbie is a $2 billion dollar industry. I’ve heard of boys torturing and mutilating Barbie dolls before, but I never heard of girls doing the same activity. Some have attributed the Barbie doll to many society ills like eating disorders. It has also been accused of causing false perceptions of beauty.

If Barbie were a real woman, then she would stand 6′0″ tall and weighs 100 pounds. Her measurements would be 39, 13 and 33 inches. Realistically, her thin waist and long legs may not be able support her upper body weight or boobs. She most certainly be on a starvation diet to maintain her thin figure.

How many women think Barbie is an ideal woman? And how many women attribute of their eating disorders to Barbie? Probably not too many. Unless a full scientific study is conducted, we can’t fully understand the effects of the Barbie ideal. Even then, scientific results can be skewed.

If my older sister had a Barbie which she didn’t, then I would have probably decapitated it since that was my favorite activity with my toy soldiers. That would have caused World War 3 in the household knowing my sister. It’s probably the reason my parents never gave my sister a Barbie doll.
