WAP

WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol, a wireless communication protocol used by mobile phones or PDAs to access the internet. WAP is used in applications such as viewing email, stock prices, sports scores, etc. WAP essentially strips a website of its graphics and renders content to a wireless device with limited screensize and bandwidth such as a mobile phone or PDA.

So, how do you I make your website WAP accessible? Well, I just happen to use WordPress. WordPress has this plugin that automatically generates WAP content from your WordPress powered website. A very neat plugin indeed.

If you like, you can view my WAP powered website using an emulator. Just type in “http://ulyssesonline.com/wp-wap.php” in the address bar. I’ve yet to see my website on an actual PDA or mobile phone since I don’t have that feature turned “on” on my phone.

If you are not running WordPress, then you have to dig a little deeper. It will involve learning the WML language or Wireless Markup Language. It’s a derivative of HTML, the defacto language used for writing websites. I found one article that might be helpful.
