Magazine Subscriptions

To a budget conscious individual, magazine subscriptions are usually the first to go when it comes to cost cutting. It goes first before cable TV, lunches, entertainment, cellular phones or the DSL. Unless you have a valid business reason to subscribe to magazines, most readers nowadays wouldn’t think twice about cancelling a magazine subscription.

Reading habits have changed over the years. Now, most readers prefer to read online. Online magazine and newspapers subscriptions are on the rise. Nearly all major magazines have an online presence.

I received a letter the other day from US Airways about their “US Airways Dividend Miles” program. Each year, US Airways sends me a form asking me to redeem unused mileage in exchange for magazine subscriptions. There are a total of 66 magazines, but only 8 slots available.

Which ones would I get? I’m thinking the Computer Shopper (500 miles), GQ (600), Rolling Stone (500), SmartMoney (500), Budget Travel (500) and Time (1200) to name just a few. With 13,40o miles left in my account, I expect to get free magazine subscriptions for the next five years.

I think it’s a great program. It makes customers like myself put value on a mileage program I didn’t even know I had. Now, I’m getting several magazines technically for free. Awesome.
