Giant Waves

Last year’s hurricane Ivan produced a wave which topped at 91 feet according to an article from AP. Yea, right! It’s probably true if that’s what the buoy says. I saw the movie “Perfect Storm” and there were some big waves in that movie. I also heard stories of rogue waves knocking off containers from a ship. As a surfer, any articles about big waves always have perked my interest. The article also said,

The giant wave did not reach land. Unlike a tsunami, which reaches down to the sea floor, this was a wind wave, generated on the ocean surface by the powerful forces of the storm.

Waves may not have reached land at 91 feet, but Ivan delivered big waves in the Gulf coast of Texas. So that statement is a bit misleading since wind generated waves eventually find their way to a nearby coast or a distant shore. Surfers are constantly in the lookout for big storms that bring big swells.

Ivan may have been 91 feet near and around the hurricane, but it arrived relatively smaller when it hit Texas. Probably in the range of 10-15 feet. Yes, big enough to make several surfers stoke for days.
