Sex Sells

In an article by AP’s Technology Writer Greg Sandoval entitled “Programmers: Video Games Need Female Touch,” he quotes Tara Teich, a 26 year old software programmer saying, “must women in video games always look like Las Vegas show girls?” The answer is a resounding YES. We all know sex sells. Would busty Tomb Raider Lara Croft or belly-baring Wu the Lotus Blossom of “Jade Empire” be the same if they were just normal ordinary girls. Probably not!

Let’s face it. The $10 billion video game industry is geared towards men whom by the way, comprise 70% percent of the buying power. Interestingly enough, the number one selling game of all time, Sim’s, has 55% women buyers. But, no man in their right mind would play or get caught playing with Sims. Why? Simple. Let me explain. For months, my sister has tried to get me to play Sims. The game just doesn’t interest me. The last thing I want to do when I play a game is to deal with women and relationships. Gaming is for geeks. Geeks, women and relationships don’t go together. I rather play a sports game or a shoot-them-up game. Give me Madden, MVP Baseball, FIFA, Medal of Honor, Battlefield or Unreal Tournament.

Some will say there’s too much violence and gore in today’s games. That’s true. Well, there’s always Pacman and Burger Time, but these games are old and no longer pose a challenge to gamers. So, what’s wrong with having beautiful women in todays games anyways? I’m not trying to be a sexist. I know several women friends of mine that are quick to point out if the leading lady is not up to par. They’ll say, “I don’t like her. She looks like Alf!” So, that’s why I leave the women characters alone. I like them just the way they are. Now, if they start shedding clothes, then that’s another matter. Slap it an Adults Only rating. Maybe, it was a typo. It should have been Grand Theft Auto: Undress!
