Surfing at McDonalds
Looking for a place to surf other than home. Grab your laptop and walk around downtown San Francisco. For sure, you’ll find some wide open wireless network for your surfing leisure. What if you want to sit down. Well, how about sipping coffee and surfing at Starbucks?
But, it’s not free. What’s the cost? Online access will cost you $30 per month if you sign up for a 12 month contract. Otherwise, it will cost $40 month to month. You can get a day pass for $10 or pay as you go for just 0.10 cents a minute. Add the $4 for coffee and it can get really expensive.
If you are not a coffee drinker, there is an alternative. It involves stuffing down Big Macs. That’s right, McDonalds is now providing online access via Wayport. You can go online for just 4.95 for 2 hours. Or $30 a month for 12 month contract. $50 for month to month.
It is roughly the same. Which would you rather do? Sip coffee or eat fries? Your call.

I do this all the time. Usually when I’m visiting friends who don’t have wireless internet at their house. More often than not someone living nearby has wireless Internet and forgot to encrypt it so that’s usually how I get online to surf. There’s a term for people who do this but I can’t recall what it is right now.
I think they call it wardriving.
