National Spelling Bee Contest

So a 14 year old boy from Indiana won the national spelling bee contest by beating 264 other kids including one who fainted, but recovered in time to take second place. What? I can see it now.

“Hello, are you alright? Just to let you know, while you were out cold. The other kid won. Sorry, we were under the gun, we had to call a winner!”

And all of this studying and memorizing for the grand prize of $12,000 and $5,000 worth of encyclopedias. Great! But, how many adults do you really think use these obscure words such as “gaminerie, sumpsimus, alopecoid and corposant” in their daily vocabularies. Reminds of me of math, most of it never applies to real life!
