The Good vs Bad in Basketball
I’m not a big basketball fan anymore. Ocassionally, I’ll watch NBA on TV, but rarely will get out of my way to spend time in front of the boob tube just to see a basketball game, much more see it live in person. I used to watch the NBA in the 80’s when the Lakers, Celtics, or the 76ers would battle it out every year.
I also enjoyed watching Jordan dominate the league a few years later. But that was then, and this is now. What’s change? Ever since then, I have lost interest. Now, I just watch Game 7 of the NBA Championship. Why the lost of interest? I’m not sure. There are numerous reasons.
The NBA has changed. There are no more big rivalries. No big stars. There’s only one team now, the Lakers and I don’t like the Lakers. I don’t like Shaq and I don’t like Kobe. I didn’t like him then even before the incident in Colorado and still don’t like him now. I don’t like Karl Malone. I don’t like Gary Payton.
Then, there’s that famous Laker fan that sits near the scorer’s table that needs to take anger management. How about the rest of basketball? Well, I don’t like Chris Webber. I don’t like Kevin Garnett. I don’t like Spreewell. I don’t like Reggie Miller, I don’t like Rasheed Wallace. The only player I like is Tim Duncan.
The Lakers and players of today remind me of the bad boys of Detroit in the late 80’s. I remembered being turned off to basketball when the Pistons won back to back championships in 1989-90. Now, its the Lakers turn to turn me away. I guess, deep inside me, I want to see good guys finish first.
Basketball is more enjoyable when good guys prevail over bad. I didn’t mind it when Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Julius Irving, Michael Jordan won their share of championships. The same applies to any other sport. Good guys should prevail over bad, but I know this is not always the case. Maybe, next year.
