Victim of his own success

Is Barry Bonds the victim of his own success? Nobody wants to pitch to him although he is only hitting .345. Six players have better batting averages in the NL. Nobody wants to give up homeruns to him although he only has 12 homeruns for the season.

There are 4 players in the NL in front of him, although Barry is only two homeruns away from the leaders despite missing almost a week of games due to back spasms. Nobody wants to play him straight defensively. Teams almost always employ the defensive overshift.

This is when the 2nd baseman plays in shallow right field, the shortstop plays on the right side of 2nd base, and the 3rd baseman plays the shortstop position. Barry will probably post superhuman numbers if teams play him fair. He comes down to superstar level when teams neutralize him. He can have better stats if teams play him straight.

In some ways, Barry is a victim of his own success.
