Psycho Girl
I went out to surf at Cowells in Santa Cruz late Sunday this past weekend. The surf was mediocre. Nothing epic. Cowells never gets epic. At best, it’s about shoulder high. Cowells is a beginner spot. The waves are gentle and never powerful. At this popular spot, you’ll find beginners mixed with intermediate and a few experts.
The draw that brings people together to Cowells is the length of the ride. Sometimes, you can ride one for about 200 yards. Cowells is also notorious for “party waves”, meaning you can see 4-5 surfers riding the same wave.
I must have been in the water for about an hour. After catching a few, maybe 4-5 waves, I took off on one wave and caught it together with this blond girl with the red ear plugs. There may have been one other person on the wave, but he was too far down the line to matter. She wanted to go left. I was caught in no man’s land. I was right behind her backside.
This spot is normally a right break, meaning you ride it right, but she wanted to go left. She got really close to me and our boards rubbed together. I gently brushed her board away fearing it might hit me. Obviously, she didn’t appreciate it.
Twenty minutes later, I was in an excellent position to catch a wave again. The same girl decides to go for the same wave. I was in a better position. She snakes right in front of me. This is a no no, which I really didn’t mind at that time. I caught the wave just behind her. I had to go around her before going right. She caught the wave also, but now she is clearly in my way. She had dropped in on me!
She continued to ride the wave, but I didn’t mind sharing the wave. I didn’t say a word nor made any noises to indicate the wave was mine. At about a 50 yards from where we took off, she decides to cut back and she cuts me off completely. I stalled my board and decided to end the ride. In the process, my board hits her. Not exactly sure where, but she seemed ok.
Then, I heard profanities. I looked back and she is paddling at full speed right at me like a submarine about to ram a destroyer on its side. I waited. She finally got there and I pushed off the nose of her board away from me. She continued to scream profanities.
Finally, I said, “Chill out girl. What is wrong with you? First, you dropped in on me, and then you cut me off.” Then I heard more profanities. Blah, blah, blah, blah. This went on for a while.
Finally, an older man comes to my rescue. He tells her exactly what happen. She didn’t appreciate it that he took my side. So now, she is now arguing with him. This went on for a while, too. This is a perfect opportunity for an exit! So, I quickly left while the other two were still arguing. I overheard him say, “I don’t know him, and I don’t know you. I’m just telling you what I saw happen. You cut him off. Give me a break, this is Cowells.”
It’s nice to have strangers bat for you. A few minutes later, I saw the same girl again in the lineup. Everytime I go for a wave, she would snarl and make nasty remarks about me while I’m riding. I was chatting with someone in the lineup later and I mentioned to him about a girl that really hates my guts. He said, he noticed it, too. So, if you are surfing at Cowells in Santa Cruz, watch out for the “psycho girl” wearing red ear plugs. She is out to get you!
