Carveboarding

What is carveboarding? About a year ago, I bought a carveboard from a local surf store in Santa Cruz, CA. I came to know about the carveboard through an ad from Surfing Magazine. For those who have never seen a carveboard, you can check out the company’s website. What appealled to me about this board is its ability to carve hills, a perfect toy especially in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I love this board because it simulates the sport of surfing. The carveboard can turn on a dime like no other skateboard. The board can literally do a 180 degree turn within a radius of about 4-5 feet. The real fun begins when you take the board to your local hill. The carveboard was intended for carving hills, not for bombing hills. This is the very reason why it is not designed for high speeds. If you are a speed demon or have the propensity to bomb hills, this board is not for you. If you go too fast, I guarantee the board will wobble at anything over 20mph. Consequently, you will lose control and you will lose your board. The carveboard tires are pneumatic (air). Riders have a choice whether to inflate tires on flats or deflate on downhill terrains.

My brother took some Quicktime videos of me in an abandoned parking lot at work back in February 2002. The video illustrates how quickly you can learn to ride a carveboard. Of course, my riding has improved dramatically since then.

Demo:
Carveboard’s turning capability = File Size is 4.7mb
How it feels to ride one! = File size is 3.76mb

If you intend to get one, don’t forget to wear a helmet!
